AutoCrit's new Grammar Checker tool allows you to identify grammar errors in your manuscript without affecting the performance of your browser.

You can find the new Grammar-Checker feature on the right-hand side toolbar. Go ahead and give it a try!

1. How does it work?

The grammar checker will scan the text in view and provide feedback based on your style guide and basic grammar rules.

Click the grammar icon on the right to get started:

The scanner will review all the text in view only, not your complete document all at once, keeping it lightweight and preserving your browser resources, which is important when working with larger documents.

Once the quick scan is done, you'll see sections highlighted in your text. You can click on them to see the grammar suggestion:

Clicking on the Suggested Replacement will apply the suggestion to your text.

Clicking Ignore will have the tool ignore this instance. Ignoring a suggestion will only ignore it during your current session. If you log out or close and reopen the file, you may need to ignore suggestions again.

2. What do the buttons do?

When you click the right arrow, you can skip to the next unchecked section in your manuscript.

Unchecked paragraphs are displayed in gray:

Clicking the up arrow will quickly scroll to the top of your document.

Clicking the X icon closes the feature.

Please note: Closing the feature will not reset it. You'll need to close and reopen your document or reload the page to start a fresh grammar check that doesn't retain your ignored recommendations.

3. How do I adjust the settings?

To edit your settings, such as the type of English you are using (American vs. UK for example) or the style guide you are following, you can click on the settings cogwheel on the right-hand side here:

In your settings, you can choose between a number of language options and style guides:

Selecting your style guide or language setting will restart the scan, allowing the feature to recommend appropriate grammar edits.

4. How do I check my spelling?

The Grammar Checker will not check for spelling errors. For that, we recommend using your browser's own spell-checker. It's free, and only takes a few steps to set up.

5. Troubleshooting tips.

If you do not see the new Grammar editing feature or the settings cogwheel in your right-hand side toolbar, you may need to decrease your browser's zoom level:

To decrease your zoom, click on your browser's menu, usually in the top right-hand corner of your browser window:

Then click on the - (minus symbol) a few times to decrease your zoom level.

This should bring your settings icon back into view.

Please note: The Grammar scanning feature operates like an AutoCrit report and cannot be used alongside other reports.
