1. How to Add a New File
To add a blank document, click the Add button on the right-hand side here:
Then click on the File Option on the left.
2. How to Rename a File
To rename a file, click the 3 vertical dots in the top right-hand corner of the file, here:
Then click on the Rename option in your file menu. Your file menu also allows you to copy your file to a specified folder or delete the file.
Add your file's new name, and click the Rename button to confirm you are done.
Your file will appear at the top of your projects area with its new name.
3. How to Upload a File
To upload a file, click the Upload button on the right-hand side here:
This will open a pop-up that you can use to drag and drop your file to, or you can click on the gray box to select the file from a folder on your device.
I've clicked on the gray box for this example.
Click on the file you wish to upload,
Then click on Open at the bottom of your device's file selector window.
Once done, your file will open immediately. To return to your Writer's Desk Projects area, click the AutoCrit icon at the top of your file here:
When you return, you'll see your new file at the top of your Projects Area:
Remember: AutoCrit supports uploads of the file formats .docx (MS Word Document), .txt (Text), and .rtf (Rich Text).
4. How to Upload Multiple Files
If you have your work saved as separate chapter files, this is how you can upload them simultaneously.
First, click on Upload in the top right-hand area of your Projects page.
Then click in the gray area on the Upload File pop-up.
Click and drag your mouse cursor to select all the files in your folder:
Once you've selected your files, click on Open at the bottom of your device's file selection window:
This will open the pop-up that allows you to
Select the project folder you wish to add your files to, or
Re-order your files to upload to combine into a single manuscript.
Click the Upload to separate files option to keep your files separate, but add them into a single folder.
The folder you selected at number 1, above, will be the destination folder for your separate files.
To combine your files into a single manuscript, click the Combine into one file option
The ordering you chose at number 2, above, will be the ordering for the chapters in your combined file.
5. How to Sort Your File Into a Folder (drag and drop, and selection features)
There are two ways to move and copy your files from one folder to the next. Selection and Drag and Drop.
Selection
Click on the folder you want to select files from.
Click on Select in the top right-hand area of your folder to begin selecting multiple files.
Click to check the box in the top right corner of each file to select that file. Selected files will have a thick red outline like this:
You can move, copy, or delete selected files simultaneously. In this example, we'll move the files to a different folder.
To move the selected files, click on Move at the top after making your selection.
In the pop-up, click on the folder you want to move the files to:
Then click Move.
Your new files will appear in the destination folder, and will have been removed from your source (starting) folder.
Move – The move option will remove your file from its current folder and relocate it to your destination folder.
Copy – The copy option will create a duplicate file in your destination folder.
6. How to Add a New Story Idea
To add a new Story Idea file in the dashboard, click on the Add option on the right-hand side of your dashboard area here:
Then click on the Story Idea option.
You can choose to make it a Fiction or Non-Fiction Story Idea.
To close your Story Idea, click the X in the top right-hand corner.
Your new idea will appear at the top of your Recent Files section, to jump right back into when you return.
7. How to Use the Search Option
To search for a file, click Search in the far right-hand side of your projects area to begin your Project-wide search.
Then, start typing in the Search input field to display the files you're looking for.
You can close the Search by clicking on Project Home again in the top left-hand area of your projects page here:
8. How to Filter to the File Types You Want to Display
If you are in your Uncategorized Files folder and you only want to see your Story Ideas, you can click on the filter option.
Then click to hide the types of files you want to hide. File types that are displayed in stronger colors will show, and files that are grayed out will be hidden.
Here, I've chosen to hide my series analyses files and my documents, to only see Story Ideas.
This is how they'll display.
Pro Tip: Remember to check your filtering if you are missing any files in your display after you've used them.
9. How to Change Between the Thumbnail and List Views
The new Projects Dashboard allows you to swtich between two different views. Thumbnail View and List View.
To adjust your view, pick the one you prefer from these options:
Thumbnail View:
Thumbnail view also allows you to add book covers to your files:
Click the 3 dots in the corner of your file, and then click on Set Thumbnail to add a book cover.
List View:
10. How to Delete a File or Folder
To delete a file, click on the 3 dots in the top right-hand corner of a file. These dots open the file's menu.
Then click on Delete:
To delete multiple files, click on their folder and follow the selection instructions here: Selection Instructions. Then click the Delete option.
To delete a folder, click on the 3 dots next to the Folder's name, and then click Delete.
